Swine (H1N1) Flu Information

We are on the verge of the new influenza (flu) season which health experts warn has the potential to be one of the worst in a very long time.  It is important that we know the facts about Swine Flu (H1N1) to avoid unnecessary panic and absenteeism.  We all need to be vigilant in recognizing the symptoms of the H1N1 Flu as well as taking the precautions needed to protect students and staff from infection.  Please review the following information and go over it with your children.

Preventing the Flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your upper arm when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • If you get sick with flu symptons, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Signs and Symptoms:
  • Fever, greater than 100 F
  • Cough and congestion
  • Sore Throat
  • Body Aches
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
If Sick:
  • Stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading germs to others.
  • Contact your health care provider, particularly if you are worried about your symptoms.
  • Contact school and work if you are diagnosed with H1N1.
Be advised that the Swine Flu is no more or no less dangerous than other flu viruses.  Influenza can be life-threatening for the very young, older adults, and anyone in poor health.  For more information: Contact Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/swineflu or call 1.800.232.4636.  You can also call the County of San Bernardino Department of Public Health at 1.800.782.4264 or go the California Department of Public web site at www.cdph.ca.gov
OBESE KIDS FACE ADULT HEALTH PROBLEMS
By now you know about the growing problem of childhood obesity.  According to the American Heart Association, nearly one out of every three children and adolescents is overweight or obese.  In addition to causing increased rates of type 2 diabetes, this epidemic is having dire health effects among our nation's children - problems that once affected only adults.  More and more doctors are seeing the following conditions in their young obese patients: High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Metabolic Syndrome, Arterial Plaque.
Help your child be a kid! These trends are clear evidence that kids need to manage their weight.  Ask your pediatrician if your child's weight is in a healthy range.  If not, these tips can help:
  • Serve healthy foods and control portion size
  • Enjoy regular family meals
  • Encourage physical activity
  • Limit time spent in front of TV or computer
  • Avoid high fat food such as soft drinks, anything fried, high sugar foods, ice cream
  • Set a good example by eating well and being active
  • Participate in the running club at school!
