OBESE KIDS FACE ADULT HEALTH PROBLEMS
By now you know about the growing problem of childhood obesity.  According to the American Heart Association, nearly one out of every three children and adolescents is overweight or obese.  In addition to causing increased rates of type 2 diabetes, this epidemic is having dire health effects among our nation's children - problems that once affected only adults.  More and more doctors are seeing the following conditions in their young obese patients: High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Metabolic Syndrome, Arterial Plaque.
Help your child be a kid! These trends are clear evidence that kids need to manage their weight.  Ask your pediatrician if your child's weight is in a healthy range.  If not, these tips can help:
  • Serve healthy foods and control portion size
  • Enjoy regular family meals
  • Encourage physcial activity
  • Limit time spent in front of TV or computer
  • Avoid high fat food such as soft drinks, anything fried, high sugar foods, ice cream
  • Set a good example by eating well and being active
  • Participate in the running club at school!
KEEP SHARP with Off Track Activities
The year round schedule can be a challenge or an opportunity for learning depending on how you spend your time off. Off track breaks of up to 6 weeks is a very long time to be without teachers teaching and students learning; students can lose a lot of ground. My hope for you is to enjoy your off track break without losing what you’ve worked hard to learn up to this point in the school year. Here is a list of actions you can do to keep sharp:
ü Read books, magazines, newspapers (comics) 15-30 minutes everyday.
ü Take a trip to the public library once a week and check out a good book.
ü Take family field trips to museums, missions, or other local family events listed in the Calendar section of the newspaper.
ü Practice your math facts either by using a computer or making flash cards. Practice the ones you don’t know very well every day for about 5 minutes. Practice reading the clock, counting money, calculating numbers as much as you can.
ü Keep a journal of your off track adventures using the writing skills you’ve learned at school.
ü Writing letters to relatives over the holidays is a great way to practice writing and making someone else happy when they receive it! Write me a letter or email if you don’t have anyone else to write!
ü Help making shopping lists and giving each other spelling tests! Play SCRABBLE!
ü A couple weeks before you start back to school, start rolling back your bedtime and getting up earlier. Be back on your bedtime/wakeup school schedule by January 31, 2009 (3 days before you go back to school).
ü Get outside once a day, weather permitting, to play, walk, ride a bike, shooting hoops, etc. Your body and brain needs physical activity every day. Video games don’t count!
ü If you have a computer at home, you can access “Study Island”, “Education City”, “Quarter Mile”, and other great programs from our web page "PORTAL."
ü Have some friends over and play school or have a family and friends board game night!
Anything that gets you to think and keep your brain active is worthwhile and you’ll be able to start up February 3rd right where you left off on December 19.   Avoid excessive TV watching, video gaming, or computer gaming/texting. My hope for you is to have a fun and safe break while keeping your school knowledge fresh.
Off Track AR Testing
Students who are off track may come to school on Mondays or Tuesdays between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to take their AR quizzes in Room L-2. Students must be able to enter their own user name and password in order to take their quiz.
TRAFFIC DO'S & DON'TS
  • DON'T leave your car unattended next to YELLOW curbs.  These are for loading and unloading ONLY - never for parking.
  • DON'T double park or block parked cars.
  • DON'T walk inbetween buses or stop in the bus lane.
  • DO be patient at the peak periods (before & after school).
  • DO drive very slowly and watch for children crossing the streets.
  • DO use the crosswalks when crossing the street..
  • DO look for less congested areas to pick up your children like along Whittier or in the lower parking lot.
Bryn Mawr's Academic Index stays steady in 2008
In January 2002, a new federal law, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), was passed by Congress. This law supports the school district’s efforts to provide parents and students with the best education possible. The law requires districts to adopt grade-level standards, use the most effective methods and instructional strategies for teaching children, and assess student progress each year as mandated by the State of California.
Since the enactment of NCLB, Bryn Mawr Elementary School has made gains in reading/language arts and math, and met its growth targets every year. This federal law requires each school to show academic growth for all students, as well as any significant subgroup identified. Significant subgroups may be students identified by race, ethnicity, English learner, students with disabilities, and/or economically disadvantaged.
In reviewing the latest results (2008), our school again topped 800 on the Academic Performance Index by scoring an 822. Our school also made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals by meeting or exceeding all State proficiency standards.  For a more detailed report and breakdown, click on BRYN MAWR SCHOOL INFO on left menu bar.
The entire school staff will continue to work diligently to ensure that every child meets high academic standards in a safe and caring learning environment. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Pre-pay for School Meals
For students who wish to purchase cafeteria meals, they must deposit money into their school meal account.  Now there are 2 ways to make your deposit: bring a check or cash to the cafeteria manager before first recess in a sealed envelope with their name and account number written on it OR use the internet!  Now, you can go to http://PayPAMS.com and use your credit card.  The system will credit your meal account at Bryn Mawr, notify you via email of a low balance, and allow you to transfer balances from year to year or to another school district.  Details are available from the school office.
