Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Bryn Mawr Elementary School
At Bryn Mawr Elementary School, we believe that a safe, respectful, responsible, and kind school climate helps every child thrive. That’s why we use PBIS—a school-wide approach that promotes positive behavior and builds a strong, supportive learning environment for all students.
What is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It’s a research-based framework that helps schools create consistent expectations, routines, and supports so students can succeed socially, emotionally, and academically.
Why PBIS?
-
Promotes a Positive School Culture: PBIS focuses on teaching and recognizing positive behavior rather than punishing negative behavior.
-
Creates Clear Expectations: Students know what is expected in different settings (classroom, cafeteria, playground, etc.).
-
Builds Consistency: All staff members use the same language and expectations, which helps students feel secure and confident.
-
Increases Instructional Time: With fewer disruptions, teachers spend more time teaching and students spend more time learning.
Our Core Beliefs
At Bryn Mawr Elementary School, we center our school-wide expectations around four core beliefs that guide behavior in all areas of campus:
-
Be Safe
-
Be Respectful
-
Be Responsible
-
Be Kind
These values are taught, modeled, and reinforced daily. You’ll see them reflected in everything from classroom routines to playground interactions.
How Do We Reinforce Positive Behavior?
-
Direct Teaching: We explicitly teach behavioral expectations just like academic skills.
-
Visual Reminders: Posters and signage are displayed around campus to remind students of expectations.
-
Recognition Systems: We celebrate students who demonstrate positive behavior through praise, school-wide incentives, classroom rewards, and more.
-
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Through programs like Leader in Me, we teach leadership, goal-setting, empathy, and problem-solving.
How Can Parents Support PBIS?
You are a vital part of our PBIS success! Here are a few ways you can support positive behavior at home and on campus:
-
Reinforce our four core beliefs: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Kind.
-
Recognize and praise your child when they demonstrate positive behavior.
-
Keep routines consistent (bedtime, homework, screen time).
-
Stay in communication with your child’s teacher about behavior and progress.
-
Encourage problem-solving, empathy, and accountability.
-
Donate to our PBIS Store: We use small prizes and incentives to reward positive behavior. Donations of new, small items (stickers, toys, books, school supplies, etc.) are always appreciated. Please contact Mrs. Harrison if you'd like to contribute!
Together, We Build a Positive School Community
PBIS is more than a program—it’s a commitment to building a culture of kindness, safety, responsibility, and respect. Thank you for partnering with Bryn Mawr Elementary School to help every student succeed and shine.
